TMS to Treat Depression

TMS for Depression

TMS is a pain free, non-invasive, medicine free, rapid physical treatment for depression that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the area of the brain that controls your emotional reactions and regulates mood

TMS treatment has been tested and proved effective in depression in hundreds of clinical trials since the 90s. We at Oaktree have been treating patients with TMS in Birmingham since 2017 with remarkable success.

National Institute of Clinical Excellence (UK) approved TMS, 2015

TMS/ rTMS Treatment in Depression

Depression is more than feeling low as anyone who suffered with clinical depression will recognise.  It affects the overall mental health and the ability to function in all aspects of life. The symptoms apart from constant sadness are:

What does TMS do in Depression treatment?

The left side of the front of the head (prefrontal cortex) is stimulated with the magnetic pulses. This helps the brain cells to function and connect with each other as intended again.

At Oaktree Birmingham, we have experience in treating the following type of depressive disorders.

TMS for Severe Clinical Depression

All scientific evidence shows that TMS is superior to medication in severe clinical biological depression in terms of tolerance to treatment, swiftness of recovery, improvement in cognitive abilities (concentration, ability to register memories) and long-term effects.

TMS for Treatment Resistant Depression

Treatment resistant depression (TRD) is defined as depression that has not responded to treatment with at least two antidepressant medicines approved by NICE guidelines. 30% of all the people with clinical (major) depression suffer from this condition. At Oaktree Connect, Birmingham we have treated many patients with this form of severe depression with remarkable success.

TMS for Bipolar Depression

Bipolar disorder is a condition that affects mood, which can swing from one extreme of elation and euphoria to complete dejection and low within weeks. It used to be known as manic depression. TMS is the best form of treatment for people who suffer from this depression which is a part of bipolar disorder as unlike antidepressant medication, TMS does not lead to mania and remains very effective.

TMS for Depression during Pregnancy

Mood disorders are more common during pregnancy and after the birth of the baby. TMS is a safer form of treatment for severe clinical depression during the perinatal (time during and after pregnancy) period as it does not interfere with physical health, the pregnancy hormones or interact with any other medication.

TMS for Depression in Older Adults

Many people who are over the age of 65 years may be on other treatments for physical illnesses that antidepressant medication or mood stabilising medication may interact with. They are also more likely to have physical side effects to medication. TMS has proven the safest form of treatment for major depression in people in this age group.

TMS for Younger People

TMS has proven safer, most effective and more tolerable treatment for younger people (16- 25 years). It is widely known that young people can be more sensitive to the effects and side effects of medication. In addition, most would not want to be on long term medication which can also lead to effects on their bodies over this time. TMS studies have shown that brain is more likely to respond to and heal and develop more with magnetic stimulation. They therefore respond to TMS quicker and the positive effect of the treatment effects last longer.
